PHOENIX — Governor Katie Hobbs proclaimed April 2025 to be Alcohol Awareness Month to raise awareness of the most commonly used addictive substance in the United States and to call upon all citizens, parents, governmental agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, hospitals, schools, and colleges in the State of Arizona to support efforts that will provide early education about alcoholism and addiction that will increase support for individuals and families coping with alcoholism. With these efforts, together, we can provide Hope, Help, and Healing for those in our community who are facing challenges with alcohol use and misuse.

WHEREAS, Alcohol Awareness Month provides an opportunity to increase awareness outreach and understanding regarding the dangers of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and issues related to excessive alcohol consumption; and
WHEREAS, experiencing adverse childhood experiences have been associated with an increased risk of youth alcohol use and misuse; and
WHEREAS, every year, 178,000 fatalities occur in the United States from excessive drinking; and
WHEREAS, excessive alcohol use is a leading preventable cause of death in the United States; and
WHEREAS, AUD is the most common type of substance use disorder in Americans aged 12 or older; and
WHEREAS, alcohol is the most common type of substance used by Arizona students in 8th, 10th, and 12th grade, with 27 percent reporting to have had at least one drink in their lives; and
WHEREAS, research shows that alcohol use as a young adult interferes with brain development, and leads to increased risk-taking, and future risk of misusing prescription, illegal, or unprescribed drugs; and
WHEREAS, results from the Arizona Youth Survey show 70 percent of Arizona youth across 8th, 10th, and 12th grade reported they had not used drugs or alcohol in the last 30 days because their parents would be disappointed; and
WHEREAS, increasing statewide understanding of the long-term health consequences of alcohol use, promoting prevention and early intervention efforts, and reducing the stigma associated with AUD in Arizona communities can enhance access to treatment and recovery to help individuals, families, and children cope with AUD and alcohol-related problems.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Katie Hobbs, Governor of the State of Arizona, do hereby proclaim April 2025, as
ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH
