Arizona Recognizes April 2018 as Child Abuse Prevention Month

PHOENIX — Former Governor Ducey proclaimed April 2018 as Child Abuse Prevention Month to encourage Arizona citizens and communities to participate in efforts to strengthen families, protect children, and prevent child abuse and neglect.

WHEREAS, in Fiscal Year 2017, Arizona's Department of Child Safety received over 48,182 reports involving alleged maltreatment of children; and

WHEREAS, children thrive in family environments free from abuse and neglect; and

WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect is an important societal concern that may affect the long-term health and well-being of not only the children, but also the adults they become; and

WHEREAS, safe, stable, and nurturing relationships and communities can break the cycle of abuse and maltreatment; and

WHEREAS, parenting is one of the most challenging and most important jobs in America. Everyone has a stake in ensuring that parents and caretakers have resources and supports they need to become successful; and 

WHEREAS, child abuse prevention requires partnerships among government agencies, faith-based and community-based organizations, schools, law enforcement agencies, social service organizations, and families; and 

WHEREAS, prevention works! Everyone can be involved in child abuse prevention by supporting local agencies and activities that provide opportunities and supports to families in need. 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Douglas A. Ducey, Governor of the State of Arizona, do hereby proclaim April 2018 as 

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH 

and call upon the communities and individual citizens of Arizona to participate in efforts to strengthen families, protect children, and prevent child abuse and neglect.
