Governor's Office Awards $3.5M for Substance Abuse Primary Prevention Efforts

PHOENIX — The Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family (GOYFF) today announced approximately $3.5 million in grant funding has been awarded to 22 Arizona organizations to support trauma informed, substance abuse prevention efforts across the state. The Trauma Informed Substance Abuse Prevention Program is funded by the Substance Abuse Block Grant (SABG), administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The program invests in substance use prevention and early intervention services to youth, adults and families.

“Arizona is grateful for our partners and the important work being done across the state to support substance abuse prevention efforts,” said Director Maria Cristina Fuentes. “This funding is crucial to preventing substance abuse and amplifying early intervention services that support communities across the state.”

The Trauma Informed Substance Abuse Prevention Program supports and expands the utilization of the principles of trauma-informed care in a comprehensive approach to preventing substance abuse. Awardees will implement culturally competent evidence-based programs and promising practices, which focus on increasing protective factors and building resilience, while increasing awareness of the impact of trauma. During the 12-month grant cycle, awardees from urban, rural and tribal communities will collaborate with other agencies to foster community engagement and support sustainability of their respective prevention programs.

The Trauma Informed Substance Abuse Prevention Program is funded by the Substance Abuse Block Grant (SABG), awarded through the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) and administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to implement substance use prevention and early intervention services to youth, adults, and families in the promotion of public health.
